Well Fed Buff’s recipe this week is for “Fizzy Fair drinks” (AKA floats of all vareities. ^_- )
This, of course, awoke the ex-Baskin-Robbin’s employee in me, who once upon a time fell madly in love with a secret menu item that you can order at your local Baskin-Robbins; the Ice cream soda, generally know as simply a Soda.
You’ve all heard the legendary origin of the Ice Cream Sundae; how there was some kind of special, super-awesome treat that was deemed to be so good, it had to be evil, and was subsequently banned on Sundays in some crazy little towns, resulting in the local Drug Store counter workers inventing the Sundae? Well, that story is about the Ice Cream Soda. (Just remove the Soda water… there, now it’s not a Soda. It’s Ice cream and syrup/flavorants [whipped cream- the original "cream sodas" were just that; sweet cream and soda water.])
The method of creating these beautiful treats that we were taught, as follows this disclaimer:
This recipe is TOTALLY vague, YMMV, this is more art than science, and if you screw up… seriously, it’s easy to fix, and all you have to do is remember that any screwups require you to eat MORE of the tasty tasty treat… heh.

Necessary Ingredients:

Soda Water
Ice cream, preferably both Vanilla and a flavor of your choosing.
Flavored syrup.

1. Fill the cup about 1″ full of Soda water (Remember, we’re working with a standard-sized restaurant cup; so modify amounts to match YOUR chosen vessel)

2. Add a “decent amount” of your selected flavored syrup to the soda water- generally, around a tablespoon or more. You’re flavoring a full glass, not just what’s in there now.

3. Take a small spoonful of the vanilla ice cream (around 1-1.5 tsp), and stir the syrup, vanilla ice cream, and soda water together. It may well look like something you do NOT want to drink. That’s fine- I’ll take it, if you don’t want it. Well, so long as you aren’t using some weird flavor… let’s leave those in the roaring ’20’s where they belong… heh.

4. Add more soda water, ’till the cup is about 1/2 way full, and stir to combine.

5. Add a scoop or two of the Ice Cream flavor you have decided to use as your float, then add soda water until the glass is as full as you’re comfortable with.

6. Eat, Drink, and get fatter, for tomorrow, we exercise. Actually, tomorrow’s no good for me. How about next week some time?

Yep, it’s essentially a “home-made” “Cream soda”/Ice cream float. But damn, is it good. And since you’re using flavored syrups, you can get some awesome combinations that you just can’t get if you rely on pre-flavored sodas.

My favorite? Chocolate soda and a Mint ice cream. ^_^
